FTC Releases Summary of Workshop on Privacy Disclosures

On November 30, 2016, the FTC released a staff summary (the “Summary”) of a public workshop called Putting Disclosures to the Test. The workshop, which was held on September 15, 2016, examined ways of testing and evaluating company disclosures regarding advertising claims and privacy practices. The Summary reviews the workshop and its key takeaways. Nearly 1,000 participants (including online participants) attended the September 15 workshop.

FTC Releases Report on Facial Recognition Technology

The report, which was developed after a workshop on facial recognition technology and subsequent public comments requested by the FTC, sets forth several best practices for the use of facial recognition technology. In the report, the FTC illustrates through case studies how companies may implement these principles. In one case study, an eyeglass company enables consumers to upload images to the company’s website and place different eyeglass styles on those images.

On August 6-10, 2014, the APEC Data Privacy Subgroup (“DPS”) and its parent committee, the Electronic Commerce Steering Group (“ECSG”), met in Beijing, China, for another round of negotiations, meetings and workshops. The DPS received a positive outcomes report of a study on the compatibility of Australia’s privacy regime with participation in the CBPR system that may set the stage for Australia’s future participation in the system.
