In what became known as the largest amphibious invasion in military history, the operation, codenamed Overlord , was the beginning of the liberation of Northern Europe from Nazi occupation. Among the Allied troops involved in the invasion were soldiers , sailors, pilots, medics, members of the Red Cross, news reporters, and combat cameramen.
