Along with the ballot, we included some survey questions for the section, and we received some good feedback that will help us shape our priorities for the coming year. Academic institutions are by far the largest employer of section members, and about a quarter of us work for some level of government.

Celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad

In 1853, Congress appropriated money for the Army Topographic Corps to conduct surveys of potential routes to determine which was most suitable for such a railroad. Four main routes were identified and surveyed. Gunnison was killed by hostile Native Americans while before completing his route survey.
