The release of OpenText™ AppEnhancer (formerly known as ApplicationXtender) 16.3 brought expanded user experience with features like the new, integrated web scanning client (AKA OpenText Captiva cloud runtime). The web scanning client brought the latest in OpenText capture technology to AppEnhancer, including greatly expanded scanning back end control. This was combined with a new, faster thumbnail preview, integrated text search and a new OCR engine that decreased processing time by 20% for files greater than 400 pages when compared with AppEnhancer 7.0.
As part of our service package process, we added a feature to bridge a gap that many of our customers and partners had identified in AppEnhancer 16.3. Specifically, OpenText AppEnhancer 16.3 Patch 07 brought a much-needed viewing ability for Office documents as part of the Web Access experience. As a preview of AppEnhancer 16.6, which has a full viewer for Office documents, “Patch 7” has a read-only version of the feature that you can start using today.
This feature, coupled with the ability to run AppEnhancer in a Microsoft Azure VM, means that the possibility of running AppEnhancer within a cloud environment can be true today – with your existing licenses.
For OpenText, it’s important that for each new deployment of AppEnhancer, we bring in the features and connections that our customers need to keep up with the changing landscape. As we have promised, we continue to invest in and modernize AppEnhancer.
What is it and how do I use it?
The AppEnhancer 16.3 Patch 7 package supports viewing Office documents in an embedded frame, which points to a Microsoft Office Online Server. To use the read-only version of the feature, simply install “Patch 7” from MySupport (log on required). The only other requirement is to have Microsoft Online Server “OOS” configured within your network. For those new to OpenText AppEnhancer please visit our website for more information
In case you are wondering, enabling this feature is easy. It really is just two steps*
To utilize the Office Online Server to display Office documents in Web Access:
- Follow Microsoft documentation to install your Office Online Server (OOS) in local area network. See details here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/officeonlineserver/office-online-server.
- Go to AppEnhancer Web Access configuration file: web.config, un-comment the following section, and set the OOS URL to where your Office Online server is installed:
<!--Configuration for Office Online Server. --> <!--<add key="OOSUrl" value="http://oos" /> <add key="OOSDocAccessTimeout" value="60" />-->
