Policy buzz around the fourth day of RSA Conference 2023 is centering on the new national cybersecurity strategy that seeks to hold software makers liable for security flaws. While federal officials say the industry will embrace the new rules, some are talking about the lobbying and legal challenges ahead.

While CISA Executive Assistant Director Eric Goldstein told ISMG's Tom Field this week that the "industry's already on board" with the policy, others aren't so sure.

"I think we're seeing some pushback from technology companies that don't want that level of accountability," said Field, senior vice president of editorial at Information Security Media Group. "And this comes down to a matter of policymaking and lobbying in Washington, D.C."

Members of the Editors Panel at RSA - Field; Anna Delaney, director, productions; Mathew Schwartz, executive editor of DataBreachToday and Europe; and Michael Novinson, managing editor of business - also discuss:

  • Getting the basics of incident response right;
  • Enhancing OT and IT security in industrial controls systems and improving their visibility;
  • Forecasting the future of generative AI, as some say that cybersecurity companies will launch meaningful applications of the emerging technology by the end of the year.
