The San Diego Refugee Collection was the first of our website proposals selected by Archive-It in October 2019. To that end, we chose to archive the websites of nine locally based refugee organizations. Thanks to our Processing Archivist’s initiative and her development of the proposals, the Archive-it contest made it all possible!

The Library of Congress archives sites associated with presidential, congressional, and gubernatorial elections, but local candidate websites — particularly for suburban and rural locations — are not currently captured systematically. Local elections are also a great way to introduce your community to digital archiving work.

Throughout the session, a recurring question that arose was how accessible web archives are. How accessible are archived websites? Websites are currently archived using the Web ARChive “WARC” file format.

A web capture from the Ukraine Crisis: 2014-2015 web archive announces the sanctioned forms and uses of state symbols in Crimea after Russian annexation. UC Berkeley Library’s Library Information Technology department contributed their Archive-It account to the effort, which now includes approximately 345 GB of data from 59 websites.
