December 1, 2016

Recently the Preservica team had the pleasure of attending the prestigious Digital Preservation Awards (DPA) at the Wellcome Trust, London. The awards run by the Digital Preservation Coalition (DPC) are the most prominent celebration of achievement representing people and organisations who have made significant and innovative contributions to protecting the value of digital information.

From major banks, to art galleries, to universities - it was great to hear about the many innovative digital preservation projects that are changing the way we think about safeguarding digital information.

HSBC walk away with Initiative in Industry Award

HSBC’s Tina Staples and James Mortlock presented with their award.

We’re delighted that Preservica user HSBC was announced as a winner for the DPC Award for the Most Outstanding Digital Preservation Initiative in Industry for their Global Digital Archive System (GDA).

HSBC’s Global Digital Archive system launched in January 2015. The project was successful in demonstrating to stakeholders that preservation technology is a truly important requirement – separate to traditional document management and navigated numerous information security risks posed in a commercially sensitive and highly regulated environment. It combines a synchronised Preservica digital repository with discrete Calm archival management catalogues covering Asia, Europe and North America. This holistic approach to collections management and digital preservation merges ingest and preservation workflows with strong search capabilities, enabling the archivists to curate physical assets, digital copies and born‐digital records on a global basis.

Suffolk a finalist for the National Archives Award

Congratulations also to the Suffolk Record Office, who were finalist in the Digital Preservation Awards (DPA) for The National Archives Award for Safeguarding the Digital Legacy for their project to preserve Suffolk’s Digital Assets.

In just over a year, the Record Office team at Suffolk County Council has completely transformed how the organisation manages, preserves and shares its valuable (and often unique) digital content. By building a compelling vision, getting council support and using 'off-the-shelf' digital preservation products they have delivered a trusted digital repository and a brand new interactive website suffolkarchives.co.uk, an invaluable information source, marketing tool and virtual shop providing easy public access to 900 years of Suffolk's history and over 326,000 electronic records. The project is already being recognised as an exemplar by the National Archives and peer organisations alike.

Thank you to the event organisers, sponsors and finalists for another fantastic awards ceremony. Digital preservation is rising up the corporate agenda for many organisations as awareness that technology obsolescence puts long-term digital records and information at risk.
