Integrating Data in the Cloud For Better Care

The following is the thirteenth blog in a series about why businesses are moving to the cloud to modernize and improve business performance.

Throughout this series, we have discussed the many benefits of cloud, including increased velocity for innovation, enhanced security, and the opportunity for ROI. Now we want to discuss how the cloud can help businesses in their specific circumstances by looking at different industries.

So far, we have discussed how we provided customers of a global financial services company with a unified customer experience and how cloud gave drivers of a global automotive company a connected experience. In this blog, we’re going to examine how a healthcare provider gave a more personalized experience for patients by integrating data processes in the cloud.

Integrating data in the cloud

Healthcare companies were initially reluctant to move to the cloud out of security fears. Now more and more companies are now migrating because of the benefits of the cloud – including improved security. Cloud computing meets many of the needs of healthcare organizations – even when it comes to compliance requirements.

A particular need for healthcare companies is to bring disparate data together. As you would expect, healthcare companies possess a mass of data. But that data is often spread across a variety of legacy systems. Legacy systems themselves are often difficult to continue to modernize. Because of this, the data has no way of connecting with other data stored in other systems. This leaves healthcare companies unable to use the data they have to its full potential. This can have a knock-on effect on patients. The patients were unable to access their own data as easily as they might like.

Our client, a large healthcare center, was struggling with exactly this data issue. They needed to be able to pull their data together to create usable information. And they wanted to do so by integrating it in the cloud and modernizing their systems. The client would then be able to pull its genetic, clinical, claims, family, and environmental data for a holistic patient view.

By leveraging Google Cloud Platform, we provided an ideal platform for large-scale data analytics, data visualization, and data distribution. Data scientists and clinical decision-makers at the healthcare center gained access to a richer set of analytical tools in the cloud. As a result, data preparation time decreased by 50%. Operating costs themselves were also reduced by 50%, while security and efficiency were also enhanced.
