Community Calendar

Whether or not you can join us in D.C., you can catch up with Internet Archive staff and other Archive-It partners at these upcoming events:

Tech and Training

You can help to enhance the Archive-It partner data API

Archive-It staff are streamlining the API that underlies the Archive-It web application to help simplify the process of connecting partners and their third party applications to information about their Archive-It accounts, collections, and crawls. If you have use cases for automatically integrating more descriptive, administrative, or technical metadata about your web archives into finding aids, catalogs, preservation systems, access portals, or elsewhere, we want to hear from you! To share your ideas, use cases, and to become a beta tester, contact us directly at: ait [at] archive [dot] org.

New ArchivesSpace Integration

We are pleased to introduce an integration that enables partners to link archived websites to related ArchivesSpace records. This work was collaboratively completed by Archive-It and New York University (NYU) Libraries as part of the Archiving the Websites of Contemporary Composers grant funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The new integration provides researchers with information from ASpace about collections related to web archives on archive-it.org. To learn more and try it for yourself, read the announcement: New ArchivesSpace Integration.

Feature release: Add external captures to Archive-It collections

Partners can now integrate existing W/ARC files into Archive-It collections. Whether created by other or legacy capture tools, inherited from a donor or curator, these files can be stored, preserved, and even indexed for Wayback replay and search just like data collected with Archive-It’s capture technologies. If you have a use for this new feature, start with the Help Center guide: Integrate external W/ARC files into Archive-It collections and let us know if you’d like us to enable it in your account.

Upcoming training opportunities

Archive-It’s Advanced Training webinar series returns at 11AM Pacific, 2PM Eastern on May 22 with Describing Web Archives, a survey of ideas and methods for descriptive metadata practice featuring Archive-It partners and peers. Registration is now also open here for the next webinar offering on July 10, an introduction to Archive-It’s newest capture technology: Brozzler. These webinars will be recorded and made available here in the Archive-It Help Center.

An award-winning web archive!

Congratulations to the web archiving partners at the National Library of Medicine on their 2018 ALHHS Publication Award for the HIV/AIDS web archive, “a wide range of web sites and social media on biomedical, clinical, cultural, and social aspects of HIV/AIDS.” Learn more about it and NLM’s Web Collecting and Archiving Working Group from the press release.

Saving Local News on the Web

For this year’s Endangered Data Week, Community Webs partner Diana Bowers-Smith of the Brooklyn Public Library convened the editors of local news outlets Gothamist and Brownstoner for a public discussion of the challenges to maintaining access to local voices on the web. For a quick recap of their discussion, see Diana’s Archive-It blog post: Saving Local News on the Web.

DC Public Library launches the Washingtoniana Web Archive

For a great new example of how Community Webs and other partners provide access and even solicit additions to their local collections, see the new Washingtoniana Web Archive portal by Paul Kelly and DC Public Library, Special Collections. More examples and sample code for your own access portal can be found in the Archive-it Help Center guide: Provide access to your web archives from your own domain.

Developing a Web Archiving Application Metadata Profile at UVA

Partners Lauren Work and Jeremy Bartczak at the University of Virginia Library consulted a wide range of resources in order to create the metadata profile that enhances access to their web archives. To catch up on their lessons learned and to see the metadata elements up close, read their post to the Society of American Archivists’ Electronic Records Section blog: Version 1.0: An Application Profile for Web Archiving Metadata at the University of Virginia Library.

If These Crawls Could Talk

Partners and faculty at the Universities of Toronto and Waterloo collaborated on a study of three of U of T’s collections in order to better understand their provenance. The collaborators seek to anticipate researchers’ questions about how web archive acquisitions were selected, how crawls were scoped and run, and above all why, in order to best understand their meanings. To see their case study comparisons and recommendations for documenting web archiving decisions moving forward, read their open access paper: If These Crawls Could Talk: Studying and Documenting Web Archives Provenance.
